Canal Winchester High School adds Lacrosse

Canal Winchester will have high school lacrosse following the Canal Winchester Board of Education’s approval of the club sport.

This action comes following years of planning and development in partnership between the Canal Winchester Lacrosse Association and Canal Winchester Schools. Canal Winchester is entering its sixth season of competitive lacrosse and this will be the first season as a high school club sport.

Canal Winchester students this year will be eligible to earn a varsity letter in lacrosse for the first time.

Canal Winchester Lacrosse Association President Victor Paini said the program has exceeded everyone’s expectations.

“We originally had a 10 year plan, but we’ve ended up well ahead of schedule,” Paini said. “That’s a testament to the community, enthusiasm among student athletes, and a strong partnership with both the school board and the athletic department.”

Paini also noted the Canal Winchester Joint Recreation District and the many volunteers who helped the program and student athletes develop. He said there is one more step on the horizon and that’s the goal of becoming a fully sanctioned school sport.

“We think this club program will prove that Canal Winchester High School can put forward a strong program for our student athletes,” Paini said. “That will make the transition to an officially sanctioned sport smooth. I know the CW Lacrosse Association looks forward both to that day and to continuing as a partner in this journey.”

The spring season opens with a meeting for parents and interested players on Feb. 22. Practices will start that week. All players are welcome to join, and no previous experience is necessary.
